Best Master system game ever! The only negative is that the level design could be better. It needed more platforming cause it was just too flat most of the time. Outside of that its real well designed with the way you can use the different animal forms.
A must play!
This game seems to get a lot of love but I never saw it as anything more than subpar. I hated the reverse jump/attack controls. The rock/paper/scissors thing was a terrible idea. The underwater spike rooms in the final castle were dam near impossible. There were also glitches were you get stuck in walls.
Horribly overrated IMO.
Nice, fair and accurate review. I too loved the music from the 8-bit Sonic 1 more than the 16-bit one, it makes the 8-Bit sonic world, apart from being blockier, feel like a darker and more serious world.
Very good Armageddon all around, some cool costumes and Games, Animal
Kaiser sounds quite interesting. Thanks for a cool booth RetroActive, and for that go on the Super Scope, that was bitchin'.
Alex the Kid in Miracle world was one of the best Master System II games around, also I loved batman, shinobi and mickey mouse and the castle of illusion!! Why did I gave my master system away :(
I played Aladdin and Lion King on PC back in primary school days. They weren't actually all that bad... jumping on camels to make them spit was about all we did. I think there may also have been a Beauty and the Beast game somewhere too... I remember also playing Rise of the Triad over SERIAL connection wtf. Oh how I miss that game. Dog Mode!
What else did we play. Quarantine Zone. That game was rad. I wish I could find/play it again. Hmmmmmmmmmm
STAR WARS ARCADE – ARCADE - Thanks for reminding me of this title. Great music, terrific sound effects of the Tie Fighters. Still couldn't hit anything for peanuts!
Last seen, Regent Cinemas in Manners Mall around 5 years ago. The arcade version, like Manners Mall, destined to be part of history.
Dammit man...after every article I want to find old games and play them again...Spyro, Medievil, Sonic series (cept Sonic and Knuckles...cause that sucked balls).
And I have no consoles...so dammit, PC emulation it is.

The ending was not inspiring. You simply get an award like every time a level was beaten. I was one of those kids who finished it. ;)
Ho..That's right, got it
I'm not allowed to say anything negative about this game. Apparently.

Good review! SA1 has always been one of my favorite video games, and one of the best Sonic games to date.

I have Jurassic Park on laserdisc! I didn't know they made games on them... but it makes sense.
OOOOMGGGG I REMEMBER THIS GAME!
Holy crap I love this site :D
I love this game, it's one of those games I had forgotten about. This is the one we always got out of the video store and played to death. <3

I must admit that as a child I did spend a fair bit of time playing this one, however that's only because I hadn't encountered Miracle World just yet.
my least favourite alex on the master system. even when high-tech world was borderline impossible.

Yes the cartridge version of Alex Kidd was Onigiri, however with the inbuilt console release that followed, it was updated to be a Hamburger.
As far as I'm aware, this was only for the inbuilt versions released in European territories on the Sega Master System II.
God...just reading this makes my head hurt with Nostalgia...
of all the retro games I played, this is what I played the most...and I never knew what he was eating between missions screens on the map...
ITS ONIGIRI!
yay! I am content now and my life is finally fulfilled
Might have to bust out the old Sega emulator and have a crack at this tonight :)
